Before you book
What to plan before you book
A few things worth knowing before an engineer visits.
Find out which side the fault is on
Your phone provider looks after the line up to and including the master socket; the wiring and extension sockets after it belong to the home. Plugging a working phone into the test socket behind the master socket’s lower faceplate shows which side a fault is on: if it clears there, the problem is in the home wiring.
Think about where you want sockets
List the rooms that need a phone point or a wired internet connection, including the TV, a games console and a home office. Running several cables in one visit is tidier than adding them one at a time later.
Tell us about building work early
An extension, loft conversion or new driveway can sit right where a phone cable runs, or under an overhead cable. Moving it before the builders arrive saves a cut line in the middle of the job. Part of the line outside belongs to the network, so some moves also need a request through your provider.
Outbuildings need a route
A phone or internet line to a garden office or workshop has to get there along a wall or under the ground in a duct. Decide where it will run and whether you want phone, internet or both. A single Ethernet cable run is limited to 100 metres.
The switch to digital phone lines
UK landlines are moving from the old copper network to digital phone services, with the switch-over due to finish by January 2027. On a digital line the phone plugs into the router, so existing extension sockets may need rewiring to keep working.
Worth knowing
Good to know
A fault in your wiring can cost you
If you report a fault to your provider and it turns out to be in the home’s own wiring, the provider’s engineer may charge for the visit. Testing at the master socket first avoids that.
Crackle has common causes
A crackle or hum usually comes from a damaged extension cable, a corroded joint, a faulty phone or a missing filter. It often gets worse in wet weather when water reaches an outside joint.
Extension wiring can slow your broadband
Old extension wiring picks up interference that can lower broadband speed. A filtered faceplate on the master socket, with the router plugged in there, keeps the broadband signal clean.
Wired beats wireless for TV and gaming
A TV box or games console on an Ethernet cable gets a steadier connection than one on WiFi, with fewer drop-outs during a film or an online game.

FAQ
Residential telephone services: questions customers ask
Can you fix the crackle on my phone line?
Yes. Fixing the horrible crackle on your telephone line is one of the most common jobs we do, as long as the fault lies within your property.
How do I know if the fault is inside my property?
Plug a working phone into the test socket behind the master socket’s lower faceplate. If the fault disappears there it is in your home wiring, which we can fix; if it is still there, report it to your phone provider.
Can you move my master socket?
Yes. Master socket relocation is one of our residential services, along with fitting a master test socket where an older home does not have one.
Can you get a phone and internet line to my garden office?
Yes. We install phone and internet lines to outbuildings, such as a garden office, studio or workshop.
Can you run an Ethernet cable to my TV box or games console?
Yes. We run Ethernet cables to Now TV and BT TV boxes and internet cabling for PS4 and X-Box online gaming.
Will the switch to digital phone lines affect my extension sockets?
It can. With a digital phone service the phone plugs into the router, so existing extension sockets may stop working unless the wiring is adapted. We can look at what you have and rewire it.
